Using Our Devices

The Shaw Community Hub now features an all-new, custom-built desktop computer (Smart-1) running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, with the following hardware specifications:

  • i7-4771 Haswell Processor @ 3.5 GHz (3.9 GHz Turbo)
  • 16 GB DDR3 RAM @ 2400 MHz
  • GeForce GTX 760 2GB GDDR5 Video Card
  • Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD @ 540 MB/s
  • Internal Blu-ray Disc (BD) Optical Drive
  • Internal USB 3.0 and Flash Card Reader
  • Wireless Gyration Mouse and Keyboard
  • Wireless Presentation Controller
  • Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF HD WebCam

We highly recommend using the provided Smart-1 computer for most presentations as it's much more powerful than any typical mobile device. If you intend to use the Smart-1 computer, please be prepared to transfer your presentation files to it prior to your event. You can either bring a USB flash drive pre-loaded with your files, or simply download them from the cloud when you arrive.

The Smart-1 computer is integrated directly with the SMART Board by default. Video output can be easily toggled or extended to the LCD Television if desired. The Smart-1 computer supports simultaneous video output on up to 4 displays via the following connections: 1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort, 1x DVI-I Dual Link and 1x DVI-D Dual Link.

The Smart-1 computer showcases SMART Notebook and SMART Meeting Pro applications. This software allows you to use the projected touchscreen as a virtual whiteboard, allowing you to take hand-written notes in digital ink, then easily save, share or print them.

The Smart-1 computer has up-to-date versions of Microsoft Office Professional Plus (2013) and LibreOffice (4) installed. Both office suites are backwards compatible, and should open a variety of document formats. Other installed applications include: Google Earth, Java, Adobe Reader, Firefox, Chrome and Skype.

You can login to the Smart-1 computer with the following username:\Patron or FFPLTC\Patron. There is no password.

The Shaw Community Hub features a FrontRow Pro Digital Wireless Infrared Audio System. This setup features speakers distributed throughout the ceiling, allowing sound to reach all parts of the room evenly. Available microphones include: a handheld, pass-around unit enabling easy participation, and a hands-free, pendant unit for mobile presenters.

Several (between 5 and 10) laptops are available for patron use within the library, and can be requested as part of a Shaw Community Hub booking.

Our laptops have the following specifications:

  • 15" Acer 2010 Model
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (soon to be upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit)
  • Microsoft Office Standard 2013.
  • Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters
  • DVD Drive
  • HDMI and VGA Output

These laptops are ideal for workshops requiring digital participation from several individuals.
